Alexandria’s Environmental Initiatives: A Commitment to Sustainability

Alexandria, Virginia, is making significant strides toward environmental sustainability through a series of comprehensive initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s ecological health and resilience.

Eco-City Alexandria: A Holistic Approach

In 2007, Alexandria launched Eco-City Alexandria, a strategic environmental planning process designed to guide the city toward sustainability. This initiative led to the creation of the Environmental Action Plan 2040, which outlines goals and actions to address climate change, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. The plan emphasizes community engagement and sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy adoption.

RiverRenew Project: Enhancing Water Quality

To address the issue of combined sewer overflows into local waterways, Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) initiated the RiverRenew program. A key component, the Hooffs Run Interceptor project, has already achieved a 90% reduction in sewage overflows into Hooffs Run. Upon full completion, the system is expected to reduce overflows by 99%, significantly improving the health of Alexandria’s waterways.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Efforts

The city is committed to reducing energy consumption and promoting renewable energy. Alexandria has set a goal to decrease the energy use intensity of publicly owned buildings by 25% by fiscal year 2027, compared to fiscal year 2018. Efforts include LED lighting retrofits, HVAC system upgrades, and the integration of solar photovoltaic systems. Additionally, the city has launched a Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) program, enabling property owners to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements.

Community Engagement and Education

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Alexandria offers programs like the Eco-City Academy, which educates residents on sustainable practices. The Alexandria Library also serves as a Climate Resilience Hub, providing resources and hosting events focused on environmental impact and sustainability.

Through these initiatives, Alexandria demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, aiming to create a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
